Question: How much do classes cost?

Answer:  Classes are free.  The Pharmacy Technician Support class is free but you need to be co-enrolled in Northwest Suburban College and pay tuition for that program.

Question: Do you offer childcare? How much is it?

Answer: We offer free child care through our family literacy program. This is only on Mondays and Wednesdays from 9 am - 12 pm (children ages 2-5 years old) and 6 pm - 9 pm (children ages 3-10 years old). Only children whose parents or legal guardians are enrolled in our programs are eligible. 


Question: Can I take more than one class?

Answer:  Yes, depending on our enrollment, you may be able to attend more than one class.


Question: Do I have to live in Arlington Heights or District 214 boundaries?

Answer: Students have to live in Illinois.

Question: Do I have to have a green card? Do I have to be documented?

Answer:  You need to have a green card for the Citizenship classes, and you must be eligible to work for the Certificate/Credential programs such as manufacturing and pharmacy tech.

Question: Are classes in person?

Answer:  Most classes are in person. A few classes are offered online only. 


Question: How many levels of ESL are there?

Answer: There are several levels of classes. Program staff use placement tests to determine the appropriate level for students.

Question: Where are classes held?

Answer:  Classes are held at Forest View Education Center, Schaumburg Library, Arlington Heights Library, Wheeling High School, Northwest Suburban College and on Zoom.  Read to Learn has various sites, which are listed on their web page.

Question: Do you have any credential/certificate programs?

Answer: Yes, the manufacturing and pharmacy tech classes lead to credentials or certifications.

Question: Do I have to take or pass a test to get in the classes?

Answer: Every class requires a placement test and evaluation / assessment of English language skills. They are for placement and “passing” the test doesn’t apply.


Question: Do I have to speak English to take classes?

Answer: We have ESL classes for all levels of English proficiency. For other classes you must speak at an intermediate level and test at the appropriate placement level.


Question: Can I choose my teacher or class level?

Answer: No. The placement tests and program staff will determine your class level and the teacher associated with that level.  You cannot choose the teacher.  We have many wonderful teachers!

Question: How do I know what level class I will be in?

Answer: Generally, you will receive your class placement on the first day of class when you arrive.


Question: How long will registration/testing take?

It will take 2.5-3 hours.  If you choose a class that will need a math test such as a Career Pathway class, you will need to sign up for two sessions.

Question: Can I bring my children to registration, testing or class?

Answer: There are only a few dates that have care for children during the testing dates. If needed, sign up for dates that say ESL registration with child care.


Question: Will anyone speak my language?

Answer: We have staff that speak many languages other than English, but not every language! We will do our best to help you during the registration process.

Question: How long will it take to get my GED?

Answer: Students progress at different rates depending on their personal situations. Once enrolled, your instructor will explain the process and the time involved. Your progress is up to you!

Question: How long will it take to learn English?

Answer: Students progress at different rates depending on their personal situations. Once enrolled, your instructor will explain the process and the time involved. Your progress is up to you!

Question: How long will it take to get my citizenship?

Answer: Currently the whole naturalization process takes about a year once you submit your application. The preparation time varies based on individual situations.


Question: How often do classes meet?

Answer: Many classes meet twice a week, but there are other schedules. See the individual program pages on the website for details.

Question: How long are the classes?

Answer: There are a variety of schedules. Many classes are 3 hours for about 13 weeks, but there are many different schedules. See the individual program pages on the website for details.

Question: How many classes can I miss?

Answer: Consistent attendance is the most important part of successful learning. Students should plan to attend every class unless there is an unavoidable situation. Check the class schedules carefully. If you miss too many classes, you will be dropped from the class. Instructors have the information for each class.

Question: Do I have to have an ID or driver’s license to register?

Answer: Some classes require identification and documentation, but most classes do not.


Question: What should I bring to class?

Answer: You will need to bring a notebook and pen or pencil, at the very least. Additional requirements will be provided by the instructor at the first class meeting.
