Travel to the scenic Illinois River Valley to visit Starved Rock State Park with its spectacular autumn colors and a brand new attraction in that area, the Westclox Museum. Located in the old Western Clock Factory, the new museum is dedicated to the preservation and display of its collections. Docents will explain the Museum collections ranging from different models of Westclox clocks, including their Big Ben and Baby Ben clocks, a vast assortment of photos, tools-of-the-trade and reference materials from what was once the largest manufacturer of key-wound clocks in the world. At Starved Rock State Park, we board the Starved Rock Trolley for a narrated, guided tour of the park. Learn the legend of Starved Rock and the Native American Indians who fought and died atop it. Visit the Illinois Waterway Visitor Center to see the Starved Rock Lock & Dam and exhibits on the construction and operation of the Illinois Waterway. At Lone Point Shelter we’ll board the new river boat “The Eagle I” for a leisurely scenic cruise on the colorful Illinois River. Lunch is at the historic Starved Rock Lodge, built in the 1930s, and featuring log walls, a two-sided stone fireplace and views of the park. There will also be free time to visit the gift shop and Starved Rock Park Visitor’s Center, home to a 400-gallon aquarium housing fish indigenous to the Illinois River. There is a relatively easy path from the center that takes you to the top of Starved Rock for those who wish to do so!
