OCT 23-NOV 4 SICILY AND MALTA Beautiful and perfectly placed in the heart of the Mediterranean, Sicily has been luring passersby since the time of legends. The land of the Cyclops has been praised by poets from Homer to Virgil and prized by the many ancient cultures – Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Elysians, Romans and Greeks – whose bones lie buried here. Sicily's varied landscape makes a dramatic first impression. In Catania the smoking hulk of Etna greets you; in Palermo it's the sparkling Golfo di Castellammare. Sea, volcano and mountain scenery make a stunning backdrop for all activities. Sicily is also bursting at the seams with artistic and architectural gems. In a short walk around Palermo you'll see Arab domes and arches, Byzantine mosaics and Norman palace walls. Throughout the island you'll find yourself stumbling upon the remains of Arab and Norman castles. In the Valley of the Temples be awed by the gigantic yet graceful Greek structures that miraculously survived 24 centuries of tormented history. Megaliths, medieval dungeons and Calypso's Cave – The Maltese Islands are positively mythic. The narrow meandering streets of their towns and villages lead to the main square, which is invariably dominated by the huge baroque church. As the countryside is dotted with medieval towers, wayside chapels and the oldest known human structures in the world, the Islands have rightly been described as an open-air museum. Join CET Manager Linda Kerr on this exciting adventure.
