The New Chicago Architecture Center & Architectural Gems
Thursday, April 25, 2019 - $116

Just opened in early September 2018, the new Chicago Architecture Center, will show us how Chicago became the “city of architecture.” The Chicago City Model Experience is one of the star attractions, featuring more than 4,000 buildings and interactive elements that tell amazing stories of the city.  A film and light show illuminate the model with a story of Chicago’s early growth, its rebirth after the Great Chicago Fire and its ever-changing skyline.

You will also get an introduction to common Chicago home styles and evolving neighborhoods. The stunning Drake Family Skyscraper Gallery is filled with supersized scale models of famous skyscrapers from Chicago and around the world. Design and engineering innovations are revealed from the never-ending “race to the top,” the quest to build ever higher into the sky!

A comprehensive Chicago Architectural Highlights tour from the comfort of our deluxe motorcoach follows. Your clever and knowledgeable Architectural Foundation guide will lead you on a tour exploring a wide-ranging history of building design and development in Chicago. From the Loop to the Gold Coast to Hyde Park you will see two university campuses, parks, residential neighborhoods and Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House. Stops and interior tours include two IIT campus buildings, The McCormick Tribune Campus Center, opened in 2003 and featuring a concrete and stainless-steel tube that encloses a 530-foot stretch of the CTA’s elevated Green Line tracks! Also explore Mies van der Rohe's Crown Hall, designed in 1956, and Daniel Burnham and John Root’s 1888 Rookery Building, a Chicago landmark containing one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s most dramatic interior compositions – a luminous and brilliantly articulated central light court.

Lunch is at the exclusive Cliff Dwellers Club located on Michigan Avenue with dramatic views overlooking Millennium Park and the Art Institute.  This private club founded in 1907 is an organization for members who support the fine and performing arts.
