Lake Shore Drive & Spirit of Chicago Brunch Cruise
Lake Shore Drive & Spirit of Chicago Brunch Cruise Friday, August 16, 2019 $130
Enjoy a summer day on a guided tour of Lake Shore Drive, the prettiest extended stretch of urban parkway in America! Bordered for most of its 15-plus miles by parks, beaches, skyscrapers, luxury apartments and the lake, we’ll take a leisurely drive to see its sights and learn its history. We’ll tour the southern portions of Lake Shore Drive past the eastern edges of Kenwood and on onto Hyde Park to see the University of Chicago. Drive thru Jackson Park, the sight of the 1893 Columbian Exposition, and Woodlawn, the sight of the future Obama Presidential Library. We then reverse our journey as we drive past Soldier Field, the stunning Museum Campus, Grant Park and Buckingham Fountain. The highlight of our day will be a brunch cruise on the Spirit of Chicago during a practice day for the Chicago Air & Water Show! We’ll sail late morning from Navy Pier to enjoy a freshly prepared three-course brunch buffet featuring breakfast items, salads, carved meats, vegetables and specially prepared desserts. Later enjoy the spectacular views from the observation decks and watch as stunt pilots practice for the Air & Water show (weather conditions permitting), an attraction that will draw millions over the weekend, and enjoy interactive games such as shuffleboard on one of the ship’s four decks. After the cruise, we’ll tour the original northern section of the Lake Shore Drive. In 1882, Potter Palmer was responsible for convincing the city to connect his Gold Coast mansion to downtown via what would become Lake Shore Drive, then a very popular unpaved path for the most affluent Chicagoans to stroll or take a carriage ride. Sights include the Oak Street and North Avenue beaches, Belmont Harbor, and the Edgewater Beach Apartments. Time and weather permitting, we may stop at the Lincoln Park Conservatory and its stunning gardens!
