If you love history, shopping, and autumn colors, you are in for a special treat. Upon our arrival, a local guide will join us for a tour to learn the fascinating story of this iconic town. Discover Ulysses S. Grant's strong ties to Galena. See where Grant was when he found out he was the 18th President of the United States, learn how Galena produced nine civil war generals and find out why Forbes magazine called it “One of America’s prettiest towns.” We will visit Grant’s Home, built in 1860 as a gift to him for his Civil War service. We also tour the Galena and Grant Historical Museum, featuring Galena mining exhibits, a Civil War flag from Vicksburg and a 9’ x 12’ painting, a national treasure entitled “Peace in Union” depicting Grant accepting the surrender of Robert E Lee in 1865. You’ll even see one of Grant’s famed cigars. Lunch is at Fried Green Tomatoes, the building that originally housed the Grant family’s leather shop. Following lunch there is free time to shop on one of “America’s Best Main Streets”. You will love browsing through the 19th-century downtown district with over 100 storefronts featuring unique gifts, collectibles, clothing, jewelry and specialty items. Or stroll around town under balconies where Grant and Lincoln once spoke. There are wine tasting rooms and a working blacksmith shop all within the entire district, listed on the National Register of Historic Places. **NOTE** This tour is not recommended for anyone with mobility issues as there will be several blocks of walking and some stairs involved. The museums, due to the age of the buildings employ rather steep stairs to their second floors.
