For many years now, Community Education has offered older adults lifelong learning opportunities that have definitely improved their quality of life and helped them maintain their dignity and independence as they age. Our programs have provided meaningful opportunities for different generations to work, learn and play together further dispelling ageist myths and stereotypes.

Intergenerational Prom:

Our Annual Intergenerational Prom allows our older adults and high school students to plan this fun event. Starting in late January volunteer committee members, composed of older adult district residents and high school students, meet every two weeks to put the plans together for the April event – from the theme of the event, to decorations, to the kind of food to be served and entertainment choices. During "Prom Night" itself, the young and old alike take to the dance floor where any generational gap becomes obscured and having fun becomes the underlying theme.

Intergenerational Computer Classes:

Enthusiastic older adult participants get free one-on-one Internet training from our high school student volunteers. These one- or two-day classes, that run for 90 minutes in the spring, teach older adults basic computer terms, e-mail basics, how to surf the Web and navigate social networking sites. Older adults and high school students work in pairs and classes are free flowing and are structured based on what the older adult needs.

A-OK Home Maintenance Program:

The A-OK Home Maintenance program operates twice a year, in the spring and fall. Our high school students, under adult supervision, provide older, low-income adults who are at least 60 years old with small maintenance projects in their homes. These include cleaning gutters, washing windows, raking leaves and trimming bushes, and doing minor maintenance chores at the clients’ homes, such as testing and installing smoke detectors, and changing furnace filters.

Senior Celebration Day:

A committee of more than 20 staff members from organizations throughout the community plan this one-day event, held each May, to celebrate our seniors – the contributions they have made to our communities, our society and our individual lives. The free event includes informative exhibitors, free health screenings, and exciting entertainment.
